Can designers learn to structure AI interaction, apply the MAIK Canvas, and design their own Claude Skill in a single 55-minute session?
Seven to eight master students from TU Delft Industrial Design Engineering participated in structured 55-minute sessions. Each student went through the same four-part structure: introduction to the three layers, independent canvas application to their own research topic, Skill design for their own use case, and output quality evaluation.
The study tests whether MAIK is learnable, applicable, and valuable beyond the Collins context. If design students with varying AI experience levels can comprehend the framework, apply it independently, and design their own Skills, the framework is transferable.
Mini-surveys after each layer introduction measure clarity and perceived usefulness. Any layer scoring below 3.5/5 signals a design refinement need.
Participants apply the Prompting Canvas to their own real research topic. Think-aloud protocol captures where they hesitate and what sticking points arise.
Participants use a structured template to design a Claude Skill for their own use case. Observation checklist tracks whether the design is focused, scoped, and deployable.
Pre/post surveys measure change in confidence for getting useful AI results and writing effective prompts. Distribution of change: much higher, somewhat higher, about the same.
